Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When did math become such an abstract language? Algebra! As students make progress in their understanding of this language, they face challenging new terms and concepts. I would like them to have access to a dedicated dictionary with over 800 mathematics terms to help guide them.

I teach algebra (grades 9 through 11) at a small high school.

The school has an engineering and technology focus and is located in a high poverty neighborhood. About half of the students do not have access to the Internet at home. Our students are humorous, lively, and curious.

My Project

Vocabulary development and concept application are essential. Success in mathematics depends on these. This dictionary of mathematics has over 800 terms related to algebra, geometry, analytic geometry, trigonometry, probability, statistics, logic, and calculus. It is an ideal reference for math students, teachers, engineers, and statisticians. Along with strengthening their math vocabulary, students will also enhance their interaction with non-virtual reference materials. Many terms in the dictionary are cross-referenced (for contrast see; see also); this has an added benefit of encouraging a stronger and deeper path for making sense and meaning of the vocabulary. Our first project involves selecting an unknown term from the dictionary, collaborating with others to make sense of the definition, illustrating the term, and finally presenting the term and illustration (poster). I hope to do more than just supply the students with mere definitions.

The editor's preface states: "The purpose of this book is to collect in one place reference information that is valuable for students of mathematics and for persons with careers that use math.

The book covers mathematics that is studied in high school and early years of college." This book has been a valuable reference tool for me as both a teacher and a student of mathematics.
