Math In The 21st Century

My students need a Samsung tablet, dry-erase markers, and sheet protectors.

My Students

Have you ever come across a math concept that you almost get, but need to see how to do it, "just one more time"? My students have varied learning styles and need the diverse presentation of math that technology can offer.

I have a great group of students in a public middle school in California.

I have a very diverse group in ability as well as language comprehension. They are enthusiastic about learning and eager to do well in school. They are inquisitive and always seeking answers until they are confident they understand the subject.

My Project

With the budget cuts, we are limited in resources to acquire technology as a teaching tool. We have the software but I do not have the tablet needed to implement the instruction with it. With the tablet, I can walk around and watch the students work at their desks. As individuals have questions, I will be able to illustrate on the white board, answering immediately, and helping many students at one time. Many math concepts require a visual answer for greater comprehension. I use the page protectors with a sheet of white paper, as a "poor man's white board." Each student has one in their binder. They use white board markers and can erase as often as they need. I sometimes use the whiteboards in a team-like setting, or for a quick check for individual understanding. I can switch out the paper for vocabulary Bingo, or any other activity to make the instruction more interesting for my students.

I have seen the use of the software as a teaching tool, and it brings the math alive.

It allows for varied approaches in both the presentation and answering questions in a time efficient manner. My students would have a more enriching learning experience and greater confidence because of increased success.
