My students need hands on materials to foster engineering, technology, and logic skills (circuit sets, logic puzzles, various building materials-legos, erector sets, etc)
Typically, students enter my classroom groggy and slow to get motivated, some frequently tardy. My vision is seeing students enthusiastically charge through their classroom door, eager to work on projects, and apply basic literacy, math, science, and social studies skills to pursue their passions.
I teach math and science to 48 third graders.
They are eager to please and hungry to learn. Excessive mandated testing is squelching their fire and curiosity. They desperately want to work with their hands and be noisy! I teach in a neighborhood school of roughly 1,000 students with an increasing number of low income families. These kids need even more motivation to keep their minds focused on learning and the realization that learning can be fun and exciting.
My Project
Activities will be available to students upon arrival. It will be a free exploration time with no adults telling them what they need to work on. They can work independently, with a friend, or in a group. My students will have the opportunity to take ownership of their learning and exploration, possibly finding a passion or talent they never knew existed! Why toys? Kids love to play, and learn best that way! Students will boost spatial reasoning and motor skills by building with materials like Legos and Knex, and explore coding and electronics with circuit boards and the Little Bits. A variety of logic games will teach them problem solving, cause and effect, logical reasoning abilities, their brains will be stimulated by the challenges of brain teasers, providing emotional satisfaction and sense of accomplishment, and improve their concentration. Having a wide variety will change up the brain’s workout and they won’t get bored with their choices.
These donations could do much for my students.
To name a few, they'll spark creativity, boost students' self esteem, create an exciting, positive classroom environment, finally giving students a voice and control of their learning experience. It will give them something to talk about with their families at home, and a reason to wake up eager to get to school. I cannot express my excitement at the possibilities were this project to come to fruition!
