My students need hands-on experiences with geometric solids as they explore surface area and volume in 6th grade. They will also be creating Math Interactive Notebooks.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Making math learning meaningful is the key to help my students understand how to calculate surface area and volume of geometric solids. Just learning a formula isn't enough. These hands-on tools will be so helpful toward that goal.
Our sixth graders are an amazing, diverse group of learners, who desperately need additional tools to better understand math concepts.
Our school is made up of wonderful students who have the misfortune to be at poverty level. Our hands-on resources don't match what the students are expected to learn, so any additional tools are very helpful.
My Project
We will use the geometric solids to actually take apart solids so that we can understand how to calculate the various formulas. Students will also be creating Interactive Notebooks in Math. These notebooks will allow them to refer back to their learning at anytime during the year. The Scholastic Math Magazines will bring the real world of math right into our classroom. Students will use their math skills in real world situations that are important to them.
Our students struggle to meet the expectations of standardized testing due to various conditions of poverty that are completely out of their control.
Hands-on opportunities are one of the ways math can be meaningful enough to internalize their learning. Math Notebooks and providing Real World situations are two more methods we can use to help students engage in their own learning. All that said, it is my goal to motivate excitement for math learning.
