The lessons I remember best from my days as a High Schooler were those that were memorable. Now as a World History teacher I am attempting to have memorable lessons regularly. This is a challenge! A 3D printer would help us to use our creative side to help bring Historical Events and ideas alive.
I teach 10th graders.
They are incredible, and exhibit a great deal of resilience and perseverance. The school that I teach at is small, no more than 350 students. That being the case, we all know each other very well. My school focuses on grooming leadership qualities in all kids. They are encouraged to think outside the box, and are routinely given the opportunity to create unique solutions to complex problems.
My Project
I would really like my students to be able to engage with history in how it relates to their other classes. We will use the 3D printer to create models of scientific achievements from the past. We might use the printer to develop models of historical places. Earlier this year we used paper mache to build Caravel Ships as part of our lesson on exploration, this would be a great opportunity for the 3D printer.
Our students come from a variety of backgrounds.
Some middle class, and some newly arrived immigrants. While our school invests in technology, it is usually the last item on the budget. A MakerBot will help engage and excite the minds of our kids. It is a tech tool that will help our kids to create real tangible things. That will help them really become leaders of tomorrow.
