Make History Come Alive: The War Horse

My students need 65 paperback copies of the book "The War Horse", to read in their 8th grade social studies class.

My Students

It is always amazing to see a child motivated to read. My students have this spirit but unfortunately, they do not have a library in our school geared for secondary level students.

My middle school students are energetic wonderful inner city kids, that just want the opportunities that any other kid their age has.

They attend a really great school, that has a very dedicated staff who tries to make the best of available resources. However, in the past two years, there have been many cuts to our district. My students do not have art, music, sports, or a middle school level library. Also, they only have physical education every six days. This makes learning at times quite a challenge, but only has inspired subject area teachers to try to implement more creative learning experiences to compensate for some of these missing pieces.

My Project

I plan to read this book called The War Horse with my students, to help make World War I come more alive for them in the classroom. I discovered this book back in September of 2011 and was even more inspired to read it with my students after I finished it myself. It is such an amazing story told through the eyes of a horse. My students will be learning about World War I and as they read they will make connections in the book to the different countries involved as well as identify the importance of different perspectives. Most history classes are taught through the textbook, which can often be dry and dreary. Incorporating a historical novel is rarely done and would make a significant difference in my students' interest in social studies. What is great about this book is that they will not only walk away with learning about history, but they will learn about companionship, friendship, and especially the importance of family.
