How do you like to read? Do you like it sit at your desk at work or on that wooden chair at your kitchen table? I would assume that the answer is a no. You probably like to read in bed or when lounging on the couch! My students need comfy things to sit, lay, stretch, and kneel on when reading!
My 19 second graders love reading however they hate reading a their desks or on the hard floor.
The space is limited on my two classroom carpets. Where can all the good independent reading happen? All good reading happens when you are comfortable and content. These kiddos spend way too much time in a desk listening, writing, and learning. Reading is a different type of experience. I want my students to realize the power reading can have. I want them to get lost in a book. I want them to become the characters they are reading about. I want them to complain that silent reading is over! Imagine what they could experience if they were comfortable!
One of benefits of going to a school with an extended school day is having unique opportunities in school. One of these benefits is having a special and specific time of the day where the only responsibility my students have is to enjoy a good book. For 30 minutes my students read. While they read, they are forming their own learning, strengthening their fluency, practicing reading strategies, and enhancing their vocabulary. In the year 2014 people are finding less and less time available to read for pure enjoyment. By supporting this project, you will help provide my students with the foundation they need to be lifetime long readers.
If you were to walk by my room now, without any comfy surfaces available to read on, you would see probably half of my students reading.
You would see the other half playing with bits of eraser on the floor, a few fighting in their seat, and the others spending the entire time looking for a book in the classroom library. The easiest way to begin to correct this problem is to make this experience feel more like an experience they would have at home on their couch or in their bed.
