As a 9th grade English teacher at a suburban high school in Charlotte, North Carolina, I am constantly looking for ways to make required units interesting for my lower level students. The Odyssey unit on archetypes and "The Hero's Journey" sometimes becomes disjointed because we do not expose our students to the entire piece of literature, and therefore they do not get to experience all the archetypes or the phases of the Hero's Journey. By using "Lord of the Rings" to teach this unit, I hope my students will become engaged in the book as well as be able to experience all aspects of the unit of archetypes and the Hero's Journey. Exploring the world of fantasy will expose them to an additional genre that we do not usually read in 9th grade, and therefore prepare them for the remainder of their high school career. Using a text that is currently popular due to the movie will allow them to appreciate the difference between written text and visual performance, but will also give them a "jumping off place" from which to begin this novel. The majority of my students come from a low socio-economic background, single parent homes, and no education beyond high school. My goal as a teacher is to help each of these students set and obtain the highest level of learning possible and available for them. I aim to expose them to text and experiences that they normally would not be able to experience without the help and support of organizations such as Donors Choose. Thank you for considering this project and my students as valuable investments.
