My Students

Do you love to have meaningful discussions about books? Of course! We all love to talk to our friends about great books! I want my reluctant reading students to experience the same excitement for discussions over their engrossing young adult book during our literature circles unit.

My students are enrolled in a reading class to support their struggling reading habits.

Each student was placed into the class based on their low test scores. Many enter the class with a hatred of reading and it is my job to change their attitudes over the course of the year. Every text we read not only allows them to explore the world, but it engages them in thoughts about their own sense of justice and morality. We read books not just to read the words; we read to examine ourselves and change our world.

My Project

I am asking for at least 3 copies of various high-interest young adult titles in order to be used for literature circles. Each student will check out a book and read it independently. Each group will meet twice a week for a guided discussion about issues in the text. At the end of the unit, students will analyze their text for its theme and create a public service announcement commercial to promote that theme.

This project is another way that I can encourage my students to be life long readers and learners.

Motivating students to read in their free time is a very difficult challenge. Through literature circles, I am hoping to provide students with an even greater reason to love reading.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
