Little Readers Challenged by Empty Resource Room

My students need chairs, tables, technology, books and more because the K-2 struggling readers are moving into an empty room that once housed the counselor's office!

My Students

Do you remember what it was like when you were little and you saw your classroom for the first time? It was exciting. There were bright colors, posters on the wall, books to read, and your very own seat. Your teacher had made the room just right. My COMPLETELY EMPTY room will not be as inviting.

My students are little ones in Kindergarten through grade 2 that are having difficulty with reading and need special attention outside of their regular classroom.

Having survived the devastation of the most fatal of tornadoes just a year ago this month, they are still emotionally, as well as academically, scarred by the trauma. My job is to help those little ones to get back on the path of success. I must help them through this situation over which they had no control, as well as help them build a strong foundation for learning. Unfortunately, funding is tight and our district is literally building schools from the foundation up, not equipping rooms. I am moving into what was the counselor's office, beige walls and all. My task is to make a reading room as inviting as possible for the little ones that I hold so dear. Won't you please help my students and my school?

My Project

What I have asked for is a set of leveled books so I can reach each child's level and help them move forward in their reading. Having the right level of books will help me find the just right book that will pique the reader's interest. I have also asked for a rug. Rugs are a great place to sit so we can work on literacy games. For little ones, sitting on a rug makes learning fun! I have also asked for an inexpensive rectangular table and chairs. A multi-media projector and portable interactive tool is also on my list. This tool may sound frivolous to some, but it will allow me to access libraries and educational sites around the world! This tool will help make up for the non-existence of reading materials. I have pulled bookcases out of my house to use in my classroom. The town's generous churches and companies always try to help us with basic supplies like paper. Since many of those were lost in the tornado last year, we will keep our fingers crossed!

Close your eyes and imagine what it is like to lose everything you own.

Your house is gone, you may have lost a family member and then you find out that your school is damaged or gone. Your family moves into the FEMA trailers and you are now in a different school. Life has changed drastically and you are only 6 years old. There has been a huge sense of loss in your entire town for a year. Please fill the void in our children's hearts by providing materials to our reading room!
