This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want my students to know that there are other worlds outside of their urban city- things that they can not imagine, but which they can find in books.
My students are 90% immigrants who attend an alternative high school in an inner city.
They know about nothing outside this city and the islands. They are students who are in and out of lockup and/or on probation, and have diagnoses of mental illnesses.
My Project
I want my students to learn that there are other worlds outside of their urban city - worlds with wonders that they cannot imagine without books. I want them to know of people that have honor, bravery, intelligence, faithfulness and goodness, and hopefully they will aspire to become as these people.
I usually go to a used book store, buy a book, and then make copies for my students.
They like it so much better when they can hold a real book in their hands-they feel more important and not second class, so I am hoping for your support to purchase real books.
