I teach 5th grade at E. E. Miller Elementary in Fayetteville, North Carolina. We have about 50% of our students on free or reduced lunch, and a large population of children have parents in the military since we are near Fort Bragg. Our school has been focusing on improving reading instruction this year since this was our weakest area on the EOG test, and I have been using Literature Circles as a method of instruction. Literature Circles are student "book clubs" in which children choose the book they would like to read and discuss with a circle of classmates. Before, during, and after reading they meet with their circle to make predictions and dig deeper into the meaning of the book. I have an adequate selection of books for my students of average and below-average ability, but my collection is lacking in books for the more advanced readers. I would like to purchase a book called "Summer of the Monkeys" to use with my advanced readers. This book is one of my favorites and it is written by the award-winning author Wilson Rawls who wrote "Where the Red Fern Grows". It is funny but thought-provoking, and I know that many students in my class would enjoy the book. It has a wonderful theme and so much to discuss! I love sharing great books with my class, and I have found that books such as this really motivate and challenge my students.
