My Students

My students produce one of the best literary magazines in Arkansas each year with little access to supplies or funding. They need proper materials to raise the bar and begin working to make our publication one of the best in the nation.

My students attend a reasonably large school of approximately 3,000 students.

Although our school has many opportunities for students, the creative writing program is very small. We have received numerous, prestigious honors (including being named All-Arkansas for the past five years and inducted into the Arkansas Scholastic Press Association Hall of Fame), yet our program receives no funding. In order to produce our annual literary magazine, we rely on donations and fundraising. My students are quirky, creative, and full of life. However, they are also typically low-socioeconomic students, and we always need materials. Students often share or borrow flash drives and cameras in order to complete tasks essential to producing a literary magazine. This donation would benefit a group of kids whose talents often get overlooked.

My Project

The donation of cameras and memory cards would benefit our organization greatly, as the students would have access to these materials as needed, rather than borrowing from other clubs and/or classrooms. In addition, a donation of flash drives would benefit individual students by allowing them to save and maintain a portfolio of their writing and design projects throughout the year. A donation of the requested materials would prove to students that their hard work is recognized and important to the school, the community, and the nation. Students would begin to understand that others value creativity, and hopefully this would inspire students to continue to grow as writers, photographers, artists, and designers in our program and beyond.

I believe that the creative writing program is highly valuable to the lives of my students.

Throughout the time spent in the classroom, during fundraising events, and on writing-based field trip experiences, these students become a family. They learn to express their creativity and to be proud of their individualism. This program highlights the importance of self-expression. I believe that the skills learned in this program will help shape the course of these students' lives.
