Literary Circles to Spark Reading Joy!

My students need 35 books (7 copies of 5 different titles) for literary circles. The book titles are "Wonder", "Freak the Mighty", "Out of My Mind", "So B. It", and "Rules".

My Students

I want to help my students discover the joy of reading. I work hard to help them find books they love, but some students still dread reading. Literary circles will allow students to discuss high-interest, compelling books with their peers, which will enrich their learning experience and enjoyment.

I work in an urban middle school with a very diverse population.

Many of my students come from families who struggle from a socio-economic standpoint. Nearly 70% of our students qualify for free and reduced meals at our school. Parents do everything they can for their kids by working multiple jobs, but that doesn't leave time for helping with homework and building a love of reading. That's where I feel like I come in. By exposing my students to a variety of well-written, compelling books, I can help them gain enjoyment from reading. Literary book circles would give my students the opportunity to talk about their reading within a safe community of learners in the classroom. The main characters in the books I selected must overcome daunting obstacles, but they manage to do so with grit and courage. I think my students will be inspired by these books and truly enjoy them, which hopefully will lead to inspiring a passion for reading.

My Project

My students need 35 books (7 copies of 5 different titles) for literary circles. The book titles are Wonder, Freak the Mighty, Out of My Mind, So B. It, and Rules. I would like to form 5 different literary circles where students can read the books together. I believe that literary circles are beneficial for learning because abundant research shows that adolescents learn best in collaborative groups. Students will take part in reading discussion questions within their groups (circles), and also complete individual entries in Reader Response notebooks. The lessons will align with district and Common Core standards related to character development, plot, and theme.

The selected books feature characters who must overcome adversity.

I believe these endearing characters will inspire my students, who also face difficulty in school and their home lives. I also think that these books have the power to spark an appreciation of reading, and perhaps eventually, a life-long reading habit.
