I am the AVID coordinator (Achievement Via Individual Determination) at East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, N.C. Our primary goal in this program is to get students that are most under-represented in four-year universities enrolled in college. I am also a 9th grade English teacher who is challenged with preparing 60 students for the End of Course test this year. Preparing students for the EOC brings new challenges every year. I consistently work with lower level students (economically as well as academically) and together, the students and I establish a starting point for our learning, and then develop a challenging curriculum that allows each student to learn at a rigorous level that permits them success. We do a lot of interactive projects in my classroom to spark interest in the mundane learning of both grammatical terms and literary terms. Many days are spent in activity centers, small learning groups, and one-on-one peer review. We do art projects as well as writing projects to show what we have learned and how we use our new knowledge. I would like to give my students a fun learning project that can be left as a testimonial to their accomplishments this year. I would like to get the supplies for tile painting and firing and, working with the art department, allow my student to create art tiles that represent a literary term or a grammatical concept. We would them use these tiles to tile a ledge in the back of my classroom. This would offer the students a new medium for learning and give them something to be proud of that will withstand their 4 years at East Meck.
