As a first year teacher you can imagine that my resources are limited. The library that was left for me was bare bones and the students need more than what is supplied. They need literacy tools and grade/age appropriate materials that can prepare them to be prepared for Common Core Standards
I have 24 amazing and unique children in my room.
Their levels vary from some who cannot recognize their own name to some reading above grade level. My current class library is lacking in so many ways. I want to supply them with tools to help them recognize how the alphabet translates to words, then words to sentences, sentences to paragraphs, and paragraphs to stories. Not only do I want them to read at grade level, I want them to write at the same level they read. By supplying these wonderful children with a better suited library with books at their level and hands on activities, I feel we can get them there. This starts with one person being their advocate and that person is me. Within days, I fell in love with these children and want the very best for them. I quickly realized, I could not do this alone. So, here I am reaching out for help from people, who apparently want the best for all children in education as much as I do.
My Project
As I have mentioned, my class library is lacking tremendously. Many of the books are geared towards grade 2 and up or they were made for a 3 years old. My students need age and grade appropriate material so they can be at the level that is expected of them. I am also requesting a couple of tools to help with letter and sound recognition. Some of my students still have issues recognizing their names. A few of my requested items include a CD that read along with the stories. Hearing stories being read allows children a chance to hear differences in voices and expressions. For some, hearing these stories being read may be the only time they hear a story being read to them besides me.
I truly feel that reading and writing are the foundation for all learning.
Without being able to read and comprehend what is being read, these students are being set up for failure. This is not acceptable for my students. I will do anything in my power to ensure my students have everything they need to succeed. As I mentioned earlier, I cannot do this alone, but I know I don't have to. If you feel like my students could grow because of your support, I would like to thank you in advance. Thank you!
