My Students
Every morning we start off the day with a chant. "Are we going to have a super duper day?" Teacher says. Students reply, "Yes we are going to have a super duper day!" This year I want all of my students to have a super duper day when it come to learning to read!
My students attend a Title 1 school in Brooklyn, New York.
The love of learning blooms in Kindergarten, but for my struggling readers, progress can often be a challenge for them. I teach them in a small group. I also pair the slower readers with stronger readers in the class for independent support. They want to learn but the task is often challenging for them.
My Project
The four iPads would be used as another way for reading skills to be retaught in a small group setting. It would allow me to adjust reading skills according to the varying needs of the children in the class. It would give the children a sense of ownership over their reading for they would be able to independently do reading activities on the I pads as well as with a friend. The iPads would provide visual and auditory cues for students , who learn in many different ways. Using I pads in the classroom would allow the students to practice motor skills and increase their independent work. The recorders would introduce students to basic music skills. It would enhance reading skills and it would teach children to divide words into syllables which support reading, writing and increase focus(how to play individual notes) and it's just plain fun !
The iPads and recorders would recharge the children's efforts in reading and allow them to look at learning to read in a new way.
This project would provide new classroom centers, an iPad center and a music center. On the I pads reading apps could reinforce phonics skills and writing apps can be used to practice penmanship. Stories on I pads could be used to develop story comprehension and listening skills. The recorders would provide fine motor practice and allow for performance opportunities.
