Literacy Inspires Struggling Learners

My students need books, a pencil sharpener, and other basic supplies for the new semester.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If you've ever stepped into a small portable classroom or bungalow, then you are familiar with the lack of storage. My students and I are cramped and everything is in a big pile! There are books, papers, folders, and other such supplies crowding the sides of our room and we need some organization.

My students are amazing 16, 17, and 18 year old young adults.

They are in my 11th and 12th grade Special Day English classes. My kids have learning disabilities and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and therefore require many modifications in order to learn and grow. Our school's population is 60% African American and 40% Latino, and my classroom reflects that. The majority of the students at this school are qualified for free or reduced lunch, and we are therefore a Title I school. My students overcome insurmountable obstacles on a daily basis to actually make the effort and attempt to earn a high school diploma. My students experience oppression on a variety of levels due to the fact that they have special needs, are racial minorities, and come from low-income families. These kids deserve the very best from their school and teachers and this grant will hopefully make us one step closer to getting there.

My Project

We are so excited to receive and utilize these materials in our classroom! Despite their high grade level, many of my students are still on a 1-4 grade reading level. It can be incredibly difficult to locate books that are actually engaging to a young adult while still being at their reading level. These hi-lo readers are educational (about sports stars and Greek mythology) as well as functional. The supplies organizer would make a significant difference in our tiny portable classroom. We barely have enough space to fit ourselves in it, much less a bunch of classroom supplies! Not only would receiving this organizer greatly reduce the visual distractions in class, it would also make it so that all of our supplies can actually fit. Our school does not have any pencil sharpeners on campus, and in a classroom with struggling learners, pencils are a must. Having the ability to use sharpened pencils with erasers makes making mistakes less scary.

Our project is important because my kids deserve the supplies in their classes that are crucial in making them functional.

My students who have a desire to learn to read deserve the ability to actually have a book that is at their level to learn from. Your support of our project would make an unbelievable difference in our class. We hope that you choose to help make a budding reader blossom into a bookworm.
