Literacy in PreK

My students need bookbinding supplies and a recording center to create, read, and share handmade books about their PreK year.

My Students

Can you imagine how your life would've been different if you had not had access to books at home when you were a child? Now imagine what it would feel like to have a book that you created and could share with your family. Many of my students will not learn to read without books at home.

I have a class of 20 Pre-K students.

They are all identified as at risk educationally and are at/below the poverty level. They attend a public neighborhood school in a high poverty area. Most of my students parents do not have post high school education and many do not even have a high school diploma. This cycle will most likely continue unless we provide them with the materials and resources they need to become educated.

My Project

The book binding machine and the binding will be used for my students to create their very own PreK books. They will create a "year book" for Pre K that they will be able to take home to share with their family and look back for years to come on their wonderful first year of school. The book covers will be used to create covers for each of their books. They will also be able to create a book of skills to work on once they leave Pre K as they continue to prepare for Kindergarten. The digital camera will be used to take pictures of activities and friends in the classroom to put in their books they create. The laminate will be used to help make their books last a lifetime. Once they have made books they will be able to read their books using the digital recorder. The recorder will also be used to help with reading fluency for those who are ready to read. For those not quite ready to read on their own, they will be able to use the CD/ tape player to follow along with books on tape.

Think about how you feel when you complete a project that you are proud of and are able to share it with others.

That is exactly how my students will feel after they create books about things they are participating in at school and then are able to take them home to share with their families. Without these "hand-made books", some of my children would not have ANY books to read at home. It's proven that having reading materials at home is directly related to a child's future school success.
