Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a self-contained special education class of first and second grade students. The students have either a learning disability or an emotional disability. They have trouble working cooperatively in groups. The students language arts skills are below grade level.

My students work best with hands-on materials and fun manipulatives. That is the reason they are doing quite well in math and sciences: we HAVE materials for them to play with and manipulate. It has been an obstacle trying to find materials that make language arts hands-on. The students' interests and scores in language arts are diminishing.

The Linking Language Cubes Centers are a great way to make reading and writing come to life. Instead of just reading and writing the letters and words, students can manipulate letter cubes. Students can learn basic phonemes to build words and word families and can transfer new knowledge to create sentences. As my class is a bridge class that serves two grade levels, the variety of material in the centers can meet all ability levels. Each center can have up to 6 students working together on a task. This is very important for my class, as working in cooperative groups has been to be difficult for them!

Supporting this project will do wonders for my students. Creating a way for words and sentences to be magical to students will make language arts fun! With fun comes more practice! With more practice comes success! With success comes confidence! With confidence comes happy students with a love of language arts!
