This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Many of my students are struggling or reluctant readers. By introducing a listening center with books on CD, I'm hoping to encourage them to become better readers.
My students have the potential to become great readers, but don't have the resources to easily do so.
They often come from low income families, and are usually single parent homes. Some children get home to find no one at home, due to work schedules. There is no one at home to read with and read to my students. Therefore, the time that I allow my students to listen to reading during school is crucial!
My Project
When my students have free reading time, I want them to also have the opportunity to listen to books on CD. In order to make the most of my schedule, the students will have the opportunity to partake in the listening centers while I'm working with other students in small groups. In the listening centers, my students will be introduced to fluent reading, expressive reading and will perfect their critical listening skills.
It is very important to model good reading, correct fluency and listening skills.
As much as I'd love to spend time reading aloud to my children each day, my schedule doesn't allow for a lot of read aloud time. This listening center will allow for the children to listen to reading while I'm working with small groups. This will allow the most time in my schedule for children to listen to reading and will ultimately become better readers!
