My students need digital voice recorders to boost their vocabulary acquisition at home, as they come from families where English is not the first language.

My Students

My ELLs (English Language Learners) come to school eager to learn and succeed. Their parents support them unconditionally, but struggle with unfamiliar vocabulary, and can't always help with new concepts. My students need a way to practice vocabulary at home before I introduce it in class.

Our school has recently gone global, which means that now, more than ever, we are embracing differences in culture.

For my ELL students, however, those differences also mean difficulty understanding English vocabulary. Redistricting means that we have welcomed more ELL students into our school, and we need to find ways to add instructional minutes for these children. My ELL students are eager to learn and want desperately to make their parents proud. They need extra support to do that.

My Project

With digital voice recorders, I can record homework passages and short books for the students to read along with at night. The recordings will not only allow them to understand the material, but will also be a model of fluent reading. I can also use them to front-load vocabulary for upcoming units in Science and Social Studies. Combined with pictures or flash cards that I'll send along with the recorders, my students will be able to learn and practice new vocabulary. When this vocabulary is introduced in class, they can concentrate on the material, rather than struggle to understand vocabulary and decode new words.

By using these recorders and recorded lessons, my ELL students will be freed from the struggle of trying to assimilate new vocabulary into their lexicons during a time when they should be focusing on content.

Learning will be so much easier for them. They will be more successful in school, which will boost their self-confidence and feelings of community with the other children in my classroom.
