Our first and fifth graders are loving it. They look forward to reading to one another on Fridays. I have seen the fifth graders begin to mentor the first graders not only on their reading fluency, but also in going further to ask comprehension questions. This happens somewhat informally, more like a book club discussion than a classroom assignment. I have overheard fifth graders point out their favorite scenes, characters actions, and ask first graders, \"What was your favorite part of the book?\"\r\n\r\nThe first graders are beginning to feel more confident reading texts aloud. They beam with pride when they read to the older students.\r\n\r\nIt's more than just about reading, though. In the hallways, the two groups smile and wave to their reading buddies as they pass one another. They are making connections to one another that go beyond reading.","fullyFundedDate":1761600437766,"projectUrl":"project/reading-buddies/9842867/","projectTitle":"Reading Buddies","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Stiegel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2440116_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1458783230022","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mstiegel"},{"teacherId":7095856,"projectId":9678309,"letterContent":"I would like to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who supported, contributed to, and shared in the mission of implementing visual supports throughout our school in order to increase engagement and safety within Elon Elementary. Your support and belief in this work have made a meaningful difference in the daily experiences of our students.\r\n\r\nUsing visuals is an evidence-based practice for students who have autism and other neurodivergent learning pathways. Research consistently shows that visual supports help reduce anxiety, increase understanding, and promote independence by making expectations clear and predictable. By providing consistent visual cues across classrooms and common areas, we are honoring how many of our students best process information and navigate their environment. These supports are not simply tools; they are essential bridges to learning, safety, and confidence.\r\n\r\nHaving access to these visuals has helped keep our students safe and has provided reassurance that expectations are clearly communicated and consistently reinforced. Visual reminders such as stop signs, directional cues, and floor markers support students as they transition throughout the school day. For many of our learners, transitions can be one of the most challenging parts of the day. These visuals reduce uncertainty, minimize stress, and help students move through their routines with greater independence and success.\r\n\r\nIt has been truly wonderful to see teachers actively using the stop signs and other visual supports as part of their instruction and classroom management. Watching students respond to the visuals placed on the floor during transitions to and from classes is a powerful reminder of how effective simple, intentional supports can be. These moments highlight not only student growth, but also the dedication of staff who consistently model, reinforce, and believe in these strategies.\r\n\r\nThis effort reflects a shared commitment to inclusion, equity, and student-centered practices. Because of that collective effort, our school environment is more structured, supportive, and accessible for all learners.\r\n\r\nBeyond the immediate impact, these visuals send a powerful message to our students: they belong here, their needs are understood, and they are supported. When students feel safe and confident, they are more able to engage, learn, and build positive relationships. These supports benefit not only our neurodivergent students, but the entire school community by promoting clarity, consistency, and calm.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in the importance of evidence-based practices and for embracing strategies that help all students succeed. Your willingness to support this mission demonstrates a deep commitment to meeting students where they are and providing them with the tools they need to thrive. I am incredibly grateful for your dedication, teamwork, and shared vision.\r\n\r\nThank you again to everyone who supported and shared in this mission. The impact of your efforts is seen every day in the confidence, safety, and success of our students.","fullyFundedDate":1757182935797,"projectUrl":"project/increase-school-safety-and-engagement/9678309/","projectTitle":"Increase School Safety and Engagement!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Denise Bungardy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7095856_orig.jpg?crop=956,956,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756999754902","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/elon-ot-denise"},{"teacherId":299722,"projectId":9617768,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation to our project, Community Food Pantry: Refuel for the New Year. Thanks to our pantry, we can continue to help meet those essential needs by sending home a weekly food bag containing 4–5 shelf-stable meals and snacks to identified families. Our school nurse also has access to the pantry and can provide snacks during the day to students who need something to get them through the long gap between breakfast and lunch.\r\n\r\nYour contribution allowed us to secure high-need items as well as items that are not typically donated—making an even greater impact. This project has allowed us to do just that. The shelving fits perfectly in the designated space for our pantry. We are using the storage containers to help us sort, organize and store the shelf stable food that started with the food from this project. We have added food from food drives from our school community, local churches and our neighboring high school. So far we have sent home 57 bags of food to families within our school. The reusable tote bags that were included in this project have been very beneficial to us. We are able to reuse these sturdy bags weekly. We added a bag tag to each bag asking for it to be returned for a refill, and that is happening. Most of the students that are receiving food bags are bus riders and the sturdy bags are very helpful as they navigate the bus and walk home from the bus stop. Our families are very appreciative of the help that our school is able to provide them with this project. Our plan is to continue this project for many years to come!
