Lions and Bulls and Bears, Oh My!

My students need a laptop for researching different investments for The Stock Market Game.

My Students

The Lions are traveling down an economic yellow brick road known as The Stock Market Game. This is a 10-week competition which student teams are given a fictional $100,000 to invest. The problem is not the Wicked Witch of the West but sufficient technology in the classroom.

The more my students experience real world economic activities, the more in-depth their personal finance awareness will increase.

My 7th and 8th graders consist of 106 actively engaged students in a rural high poverty area. This talented group of kids is made up of resource, GT, and the economically disadvantaged youngsters. The purchase of a laptop will push my students' interest and learning beyond the textbook and into the real world. As they study the stock market, their road will be filled with many ups and downs. The students are very keen with what is happening in the world and eager to know how current events affect our economy.

My Project

My students need a laptop for researching different investments for The Stock Market Game. Just like in the Wizard of Oz, my students seek "knowledge," "heart" and "courage." With a laptop, the students will be able to gain "knowledge" about companies they are interested in using real time data. Along the way they will learn economic terms, critical thinking skills and research skills. The students also strive to get to the "heart" of the information in order to make informed decisions about which stocks to purchase. Having access to a laptop in our classroom is a vital part of this game as time is, more often than not, too limited to take the entire class to a computer lab especially during the research process. As a team, they use their "courage" to take risks and make the big investments needed to win. Watching out for the bulls and bears along the way, the laptop would allow the teams daily access to analyzing information concerning the companies in their portfolio and make adjustments as the market changes. Think of your donation as an investment into the future.

It has been proven that students have greater understanding when they are actively involved in the learning process.

That is what The Stock Market Game is all about. Along their journey down the economic brick road, they will learn the value of investing and understand economics better, looking towards the future. Please help us by supporting the future of my kids! Thank you for your consideration!
