Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember learning math as a set of rules you had to follow but not really understanding why it was important? My students could really use a way to connect with geometric concepts.
My students are creative thinkers and problem solvers.
They possess a healthy appetite for making sense of their world. An ethnically diverse group, these students attend a rural Title I school in Florida where more than 80% of students receive free or reduced price lunch.
My Project
I will be sharing Grandfather Tang's Story, a book which introduces the tangram puzzle pieces and forms they can take to the students. Getting a chance to make a link from the Grandfather Tang's Story read aloud to hands-on activities with the Tangrams sets, Math Machine Tangram Puzzle Cards and Shape by Shape Game will allow these students to make sense of geometry, not just memorize formulas and facts. Students will learn about transformations (flips, slides, and turns of the pieces), composition and decomposition of shapes, fractional concepts, as well as perimeter and area concepts. The Tangrams and Pentominoes book will provide further ideas of getting the most out of the tangram puzzles and will help students to deepen their understanding.
Your donations to this project will impact my students by giving them a foundation of understanding early on in their lives.
This will serve to provide them future success in mathematics and problem solving.
