My Students

Lights, Camera, Action! There's nothing like seeing yourself on film.

We are a charter school of about 350 young women in an urban setting.

Virtually all of our students receive free lunch. Our school's focus is science and we've started a new elective class that focuses on problem solving and learning from experiments. The students in this class are all very driven and chose this class instead of a study hall.

My Project

We would like this video camera so that students can tape themselves and see what they did, then reflect on this, and improve the next time. In addition, they will be using it to film some of their data during future experiments. By far the most important part of our class is our students learning from their successes and failures. It's such a crucial skill in a science classroom and in life. Sometimes it's overwhelming to think about 2 weeks of working on a problem. Seeing a brief snapshot makes it much more

We tried to tape the class with my digital camera, but the sound quality is so bad that you can't hear anything they are saying and can just see blocky people.

They still love "seeing themselves" and are it reminds them of the situation, but it would be so helpful to clearly see lab set ups and hear conversations that they had in the beginning of experiments, and so on.
