This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember a time in school when your teacher did something to get you really excited about learning? I work with a wonderful group of 2nd graders at a low income school in California and they need something to get them excited and eager to read!!

My wonderful students attend a title one school in California.

More than half of the student body qualifies to receive free or reduced lunches. Many do not have access to technology or reading material at home, leaving school the only opportunity for exposure to high quality literature and access to technology. As is the case with all classes, I have a wide range of reading abilities in my room from very advanced to struggling and in dire need of intervention.

My Project

Small group language arts instruction during our daily workshop time has made a major impact on students. This is time set aside to target specific student needs. My struggling readers are making great strides, while my more independent/advanced students are challenged. These two Kindles will be used to service a multitude of student needs. I will use them during workshop time for reading, sight words/nonsense word drills, phonics games, and to access websites that correlate with our current language arts adoption. Students can use them to take Accelerated Reader tests, play math games, and best of all...READ! I believe incorporating these Kindles into the classroom will be just the spark my students need to keep up the hard work they have already put in to improve reading skills. They can be used for many years to come!

When helping with this project you will help to provide exposure to technology and access to a multitude of learning opportunities for a group of kids who are so eager to learn and succeed.

These are not kids who have much, but are so appreciative of what they have. They light up with excitement when they learn something new or see that they can do something they could not do before. I want to give them something to keep that light of excitement for learning burning bright!
