See what Mrs. L. is requestingMy students need a Brinsea Advance Automatic Egg Incubator to incubate chicken eggs. We also need a humidity pump for our incubator to better regulate the humidity.

My students and I have been exploring life cycles (plants and animals). We have been planting seeds and watching them grow into mature plants with flowers/fruits. We have found salamander eggs in a creek and watched one hatch. Most recently, we have been trying to successfully hatch chicken eggs.
I work with a group of 17 gifted and talented students.
Our school promotes inquiry and my students thrive on asking and answering questions all day long. My students have learned so much this year and have been so engaged with our project of hatching eggs. We have also been working with about 80 kindergarteners, another third grade class, and have been blogging about the whole experience. We are using a webcam to keep an eye on our chicks/incubator so that everyone sees everything! This has enabled us to collaborate with others and share our learning with parents, community members, and even schools outside of our district!
We are in our second round of incubation with an incubator that has huge fluctuations in temperatures. Together, we have learned from our mistakes the first time incubating and made some changes such as: adding a fan, perfecting the process of adding water to our incubator, using a hygrometer, and charting our temperatures and humidity 3 to 4 times a day. It has been about a week and with the new fan in the incubator we have, the water evaporates too quickly causing other problems. After examining our data so far, it is very likely we will have a a very low hatch rate again. We have decided that we need a more reliable incubator. After researching the different types, the Brinsea seems that it will meet our needs and by adding the humidity pump, surely we will be able to have better control of that factor. We will continue blogging about our learning throughout the entire process and plan to present everything we have learned from start to finish at the end of the year to others.
When this all began, my hope was to show students the life cycle.
When we were unsuccessful because our chicks didn't survive, it became clear that there was a much bigger lesson to be learned: Our mistakes can lead to our successes! They are young scientists- analyzing data and making adjustments as needed. My students are incredibly determined to have a successful hatch. We are hopeful the better incubator and humidity pump will lead to success, but most importantly even more learning!
