Let's Put the Media into Library Media!

My students need a 42" plasma HDTV as a way to view videos that complement the wonderful collection of books that we have. Until now, we have had a 19" television, and it is not adequate.

My Students

A year ago, I became the Library Media Specialist here. I have spent hours in various workshops and conferences learning how what and how to teach the 21st century learner. However, with the tools I have here, it is barely possible. The computers are out of date, the TVs woefully inadequate.

We are a public elementary school, 300 students, in kindergarten through grade 5.

There are two or three classes per grade level. We have specials that include art, phys ed, music, library, and tech/computer classes. The students have one special a day that lasts 45 minutes. They also have the opportunity to participate in chorus and/or band. I am the library media and technology integrator, which to me are the best of both worlds! As often as I can, I like to link books in our collection to help the students make outside connections. Currently, the movie "Hugo" is playing in the theaters. We have highly touted the book, "The Invention of Hugo Cabret,' which has stimulated much interest in the kids. Viewing the trailers of popular movies is an effective way to get interest sparked! Many of our 4th graders took out all the copies of the book we had and then their teacher arranged for a mini "field trip" to the cinemas to see the movie!

My Project

If we are able to purchase a new, large TV screen, we will be able to engage our students much more easily. In my media literacy class, I show old TV commercials which they could barely see on our little TV. They are rather poorly preserved which makes it even more difficult. Now they will be able to actually see them which will certainly enhance our discussions! My paraprofessional teaches library lessons to kindergarten and grades 1 and 2. She often will show a VCR tape that corresponds with the lesson she is teaching. As an example, if she is teaching about nutrition, after she is done reading the book, she might pop in a video by Bill Nye on nutrition. We love to use a variety of ways to teach our students. Differentiation in the digital age is a challenge but not one that cannot be managed. With the right equipment, it would be much nicer...and easier!

Because we see all the students in the school in a week, this purchase would benefit many people.

Media is very important and is considered one of the literacies that students need to be familiar with in order to determine meaning and understand context. At our school, I try to give many opportunities for students to create their own learning. If computers are needed, I make sure those are available. If books or DVDs are needed, we make every attempt to acquire them. A new TV would surely help!
