This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Baseball and softball are not just games to my students. The majority of our players come from communities with little exposure to baseball and softball. These two sports offer a pathway to achievement beyond the classroom.
My students attend a public middle school in a very low-income community in Atlanta, GA.
Sports are very important to my students, as our school mission includes scholarship, leadership, citizenship and sportsmanship. Baseball and softball are not sports that are common in our school community. Participating in these sports provides my students exposure to new experiences and college opportunities beyond football and basketball. As one of our softball and baseball coaches, I see how my students look at the practice resources they are given with disappointment. We need a proper field to play on, so they are encouraged to continue with these sports.
My Project
Currently, our field consists of a grassy area with a baseball/softball backstop. Unfortunately, we're often unable to use the field due to all the fire ants and holes in the field. If we receive the Round Up, fertilizer, field drag and shovels requested, our teams will be able to create a safe space to play the game. The bases and base dig tool will allow us to have the basics necessary to finally practice at our own school. These materials will make a huge difference to the young men and women on our baseball and softball teams.
With these requested materials, our school will be able to create and maintain a baseball/softball field for students in our community for years to come.
Both of these sports provide access to new experiences. Please help us make this a reality.
