Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Do you have positive memories of your high school chemistry class? Being able to mix chemicals, learn about atoms, and learn about the world around you. Hands on experiments is what made chemistry memorable for most people and without them, Chemistry can become a drag.

Many of the materials that I am requesting are tangible visual aids that will be used for labs and hands-on activities.

I am asking for some density cubes, tuning forks, Newtonian demonstrator, and other science materials. The molecular modeling kits will be used by the students to help them visualize what molecules look like. The density cubes, tuning forks, and other materials will help the students understand the physical science concepts behind the mathematical equations used in the course. Being that this will be my first full year as a teacher at a high poverty school, the amount of resources in the classroom are very limited. Currently, the students have only been able to visualize the topics using pictures, drawings, and worksheets. Although they can see the concepts, many students that are tactile learners have trouble visualizing the material.

My Project

I will be teaching physical science and chemistry. With the tuning forks, I will be able to give the students a real life example of sounds waves and show a comparison of the sounds waves. With the density cubes, I will be able to teach the students about the differences between density amongst materials. With the Newtonian demonstrator, I will be able to talk about force, motion, and momentum.

This project is important for me because I feel that all students need a practical education.

Students need to graduate with the ability to apply their knowledge in the work place, use critical thinking skills, and understand inquiry.
