Let's Keep These Kids Reading Books! - I am Malala
My students need a class set of the book "I am Malala"

My Students
My students, especially my English Language Learners, need engaging, relevant novels to read in class. I have seen what popular and important novels like "The Outsiders" and "Persepolis" can do.
My students are very diverse, culturally and academically.
They appreciate this tremendous diversity. They attend one of the top public schools in the city. They take pride in their school. They participate in community events and are developing citizenship skills along with academic skills.
My Project
We will use the class set of "I am Malala" in my English class. It will be taught and read as we engage in a standards-based curriculum that teaches students to interact directly with the text - for example, students will keep a log of important quotations. Additionally, they will work collaboratively on a culminating project that demonstrates what they have learned from this amazing story.
My two main goals as an ELA educator are to help students develop a love of reading while also developing their knowledge and understanding of the larger world.
Using excellent, engaging books written by and about people who are from different cultures, works to accomplish both of my goals.
