Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember how it was like to be in kindergarten? At this age students learn best through imaginative and dramatic play.
I currently teach a self-contained bilingual combo of kindergarden and 1st graders.
Our charter school is located in a low-income area. The budget cuts have greatly impacted our school. For the last years our administrators have been prioritizing basic needs to keep our school up and running. Teachers and school staff heavily rely on parents on donations to support classroom needs. Although, it gets to a point where only few parents can carry the burden.
My Project
In my experience as a teacher, I have learned that students learn and retain more information when they create. Our first unit of study this year is about community. Therefore, students will have to take into action to create a community. I can anticipate my students using their imagination and a variety of resources to create this community. In return I would like to provide them with some wooden cars including construction vehicles, Cargo Trucks and Car Carriers to add to their transportation component.
Contributing to this project is going to enable my students to learn the different roles that exist in a community through dramatic play.
My hopes are that by the end of the unit my students feel empower enough to be able to analyze issues that are in their community and take an active role to improve them.
