This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Special Olympics include those who are not included through traditional sports. Please help my class participate in this event by furnishing the equipment needed to practice and compete.

I teach a Special Education class.

The class ranges in age from 16-22. My job is to get these young adult ready to live in the real world. I would like to introduce them to Special Olympics. Special Olympics is a competition that gives people of all ages and abilities a social atmosphere and a feeling of belonging so they may become lifelong learners. Exercise to combat obesity, and social interaction are two of the biggest challenges our population of special needs adults face. Special Olympics help battle through these challenges.

My Project

The equipment I have requested will allow the students to compete in the local Special Olympics Bocce tournament. They will be competing against others with similar scores so that skill levels will be appropriate. Practice is important so that pairing will be competitive. We will practice during the school day, twice a week. On the day of the competition, they will stand proud for what they have learned, accomplished, and the new friends they have made.

Can you imagine being home all day everyday with nothing to do, nowhere to go, and no one to talk to?

Me either. But, this is the day to day life that people with special needs face. Special Olympics gives those with special needs a place to go, friends to talk to, and a reason to get out of bed and be active. Will you please help me give these kids a head start on learning how to get involved and stay involved. I will supply the labor, if you supply the equipment.
