My students need 55 preserved frogs and gloves so they can have the opportunity to perform hands-on dissections (I already have dissection kits from previous years!).

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

One of my most vivid memories from my middle school science class was the frog dissection that we did (and in high school, the fetal pig dissection). For me, the hands-on experience of dissecting a preserved organism was what really drew me into science.

I remember I could not stop telling my parents about the dissection when I came home from school that day.

I could not believe I saw, with my own eyes, the organs my teacher had talked about in class and that I had read so much about in textbooks. I was very fortunate to have gone to a school where teachers were able to obtain such resources without difficulty. Here in the Delta, many of my students live in poverty and are on free or reduced lunch. However, a lack of resources is not equivalent to an unwillingness to learn!

My Project

I did the frog dissection with my students last year as well as this year, and they LOVED it. Students I taught last year always come up to me and ask if I am still doing the frog dissection, and my current students still can't stop talking about it. Even though I complete my two year corps commitment in June 2013, I have signed on to teach a third year (maybe more!), and I want to make sure that I can continue this tradition of dissecting frogs with my students next year as well. Your donation of frogs and gloves would make this a possibility :)

Dissections in middle school and high school were the highlight of my science classes, and they were, quite frankly, one of the most exciting things I did while I was at school.

Hands-on activities always help to bring to life and reinforce what is learned from the teacher and textbooks.
