This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our middle school looks like a prison! Few plants, lots of asphalt, no murals. Our administration has expressed interest in a mural! Our ART students are practicing the ART of perspective and aim to paint a mural from their point of view!

Our middle school students are full of energy and willing to learn.

Many of their parents work two or three jobs, yet our PTA is growing. The neighborhood around our school is a great mix of cultures and backgrounds. Many of our students walk or ride their bikes to school. Our school was one of the top schools in our town fifty years ago or so. Ten years ago it was regarded as one of the worst schools, and today it is moving back up to being a highly respected and well-loved school.

My Project

We're going to paint a mural about 40' long x 14' high. To do this we need to practice both painting and learning how to scale our images. This set of tempera paint and paper will be used in the ART classroom on a variety of painting projects including self portraits, landscapes and abstract/dream-like fantasy paintings. We'll choose one of the best student works (or a group of works) for the mural.

Young people today are very creative, yet our technology requires them to be very passively engaged, witnessing other people's creativity.

This project will support students engaging their own point of view, expressing it visually and witnessing other people engaging their creativity.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
