This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Nobody rises to low expectations" —Calvin Lloyd. My classrooms span a range of reading levels, personalities, and struggles. They are happily motivated on some days, and distracted by problems far outside the classroom on others. Each voice matters; each deserves high, attainable expectations.

My 50 students span three 6th grade middle school classrooms at a low-income public school in a Midwest metropolis.

My students are bilingual, having mostly gone to our foreign language immersion school for their entire education. The community at our school is very strong, with high parent engagement and a positive, close staff and administration. That said, my students struggle. Their home language is often much stronger than their English, and they fall often several years behind grade level but their motivation is strong. They are caring students with sharp, critical opinions about the world around them. When faced with high expectations in a consistent, trackable, meaningful way, they respond with enthusiasm.

My Project

Next year, I have chosen to adopt the rigorous and deeply thorough EngageNY curriculum for 6th grade ELA. The first module of this revolves around the high-interest fantasy novel, "The Lightning Thief" by Rick Riordan. Guiding the unit are three Guiding Questions: What is the hero's journey?, What makes a myth?, and Why do myths matter? This rigorous 8-week unit will culminate in a "My Hero's Journey" narrative, applying these elements and purposes to a creative problem and journey. Broken into three sub-units, students will closely read and analyze 9 separate texts, literary and informational, to deepen these concepts, make meaningful connections, and apply them to their own world. At the center of the unit is "The Lightning Thief," and it is crucial that each student have their own copy for home and school. Most importantly, this unit sets the foundation for rigorous, rewarding learning where students own their reading.

When I think about next year, I envision reading, writing, class conversations, and critical thinking that students will own and be proud of.

I envision the conversations around their reading books for each unit, and the impact of digging deep into shared universes. My students respond to challenge, high expectations, and rewarding literature. With your help, we can turn that drive into impactful learning that rises these students to their potential and extends years beyond. Thank you!
