My Students

Creating lifelong learners starts at a young age, by engaging them in their learning. Can you imagine how engaging it would have been to have had high interest stories with animated pictures read to you? This project will help spark my students' interest in reading!

I teach a class of 30 bright, inquisitive and eager second grade students who are ready to learn!

Each of these 30 students brings with them a variety of interests and abilities, it is part of my job to play off these interests to engage them in their learning. This engagement is easily attained through art projects and discussion, but can be lost when a student is struggling or bored in reading. The iPads will allow each student to choose stories to read at their instructional level, or even have stories read to them. Today's students have access to technology at a young age and they are very comfortable using it for games, learning and communicating. By including technology in the classroom we are playing off of a skill they already have and personalizing their instruction in the process. Another way to help our students connect with the world around them is by adding more non-fiction to our instruction, Scholastic News will help us accomplish this.

My Project

My students love to read stories about topics they can relate with. By providing my students with individual copies of Scholastic News, a weekly newspaper, they will be learning about current events from a kid's perspective, making it easier to relate with. Our class will be able to use the iPads to further research current events of interest and complete follow-up activities from Scholastic online. Combining technology and print will give my students opportunities to read in different contexts, making more connections to the world around them. Imagine a class where the students beg the teacher to read and are motivated by the high interest, student centered content.

Technology has become an integral part of our world and our students' lives.

When technology is integrated in the classroom, students are able to work on high interest reading and math skills independently. Students will do their best work so that they can have the "privilege" of using the iPads for practice. By giving to our project you are keeping us up-to-date on current events for the rest of the year! Help us develop readers that love to read, and will continue on to be lifelong learners!
