My students need fluency and reading comprehension games ans scripts to enhance their reading skills and be ready for standardized tests.

My Students

Fluency is the biggest struggle my students have had this year. If a child does not have a strong fluency rate, it could hinder their reading comprehension.

My students are faced with the struggle of high poverty.

Some of our students are enrolled in the backpack program that a local church provides because their parents do not have much food at home. 54% of the student population is in the free or reduced lunch program. I teach 18 third grade students where 13 of them are ESL students who speak another language at home. Their ages range from 8-10 years old. Our school is a Title I public elementary school with about 700 students ranging from grades PreK-6.

My Project

Fluency and reading comprehension is one of the toughest concepts for ESL students to grasp. They speak one language at home and English at school. This is difficult for my students because their family members are unable to help. I have a student who has to be our language translator during a parent conference because the parent does not understand English well but the child does. This project will allow my students to be able to build fluency which will lead to strengthening reading comprehension. The Reader's Theater book is full of scripts for children to read. It has been proven that script reading builds fluency because of the repeated readings and practice. The Partner Scripts will also help with fluency because of the repeated readings as well. The set of board games will build reading comprehension with practice. It is a fun way to tie in comprehension and let students explore the concept themselves. I will also allow them to take them home to play with a family member.
