About My Students

Destiney and Keith are two of my favorite students. They are funny, personable and are eager to do well in school. Unfortunately, they don't always have the desire to persist in problems that they see as being "too hard".

They noticed that I, and their other teachers, frequently talk to students about the need to keep trying and not give up when something seems hard. We realized that when it is something fun (like video games) instead of schoolwork, they were much more likely to try to solve their own problems and not give up.

One of the most important things than I can teach my students is that they have the ability to succeed, though it may take some work. These games will let me give them practice at problem-solving and using their reasoning skills in a way that is fun and non-threatening. The specific games I have selected will also teach them important math and science topics, like using the scientific method, solving for an unknown variable and the utility of trial and error.

In Their Own Words

When we have free time we can challenge ourselves and maybe get better at school. We could help ourselves get better if we are having problems in a subject at school. It would make us less quiet and we could ask for help and work together. And if you don't do your work, you wouldn't get to play the game.

I can help my teacher by making sure that everything is put away neatly and by teaching students how to play the games. I could come in at nutrition and play games with students who don't have friends to be with.

Lots of kids at my school get upset and quit when they think something is hard, but quitting means you won't learn everything that you are supposed to learn. I think these games will make people happier and make them want to learn.
