Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Step away from the Wii, xBox, Play Station, Game Cube, and DS lite to play board games! Technology is fun and interactive; however, students need to learn how to use cooperation and teamwork to demonstrate language arts literacy skills by playing board games.

My students live in an urban community and most receive free lunch.

Last year our school was able to meet safe harbor; our standardized test scores improved by 10%. My basic skills students for reading and math demonstrated that 75% were proficient. Students are eager to learn, but the classroom instruction has to be student centered. Our school is trying to incorporate centers and group activities that will promote group thinking and learning.

My Project

The curriculum mastery games are double-sided laminate game boards, include interactive flash cards on a CD, and 25 sets of 30 standards-based review topics. Students will be able to use the game cards and game boards to answer questions related to language arts (grammar, spelling, and vocabulary), reading comprehension, and writing.

When students reach 3rd grade they are using language arts and literacy to learn new skills.

The transition for students is not learning to read, but reading to learn. Respectfully, students have to become active learners, and game based learning promotes the teacher's ability to differentiate instruction by accommodating students' learning styles.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
