My Students

At some point in our lives, most of us have created "something" while playing with Legos. The challenge of a librarian is to grow readers by getting students to not only read but LOVE reading. What better way to do this than by allowing students to read, imagine, and create with a Lego Makerspace.

Students at my elementary school have not had the opportunity to know what a "welcoming" library feels like.

I will transition to the library this upcoming school year after being a classroom teacher at this school for 5 years. I (along with students, faculty, and parents) am excited about the opportunity to build a welcoming library while growing life-long readers. Students enjoy the overall school climate and are eager to learn.

My Project

Makerspaces are learning environments that engage students in projects based on their own interests and ability. Students (Pre-K thru 5th grade) will be encouraged to checkout books that interest them and return the book for an opportunity to use their creativity. When the students return their book and have a conversation with the librarian about what they've read, they will receive 2 Lego Bricks to place on the Lego Plate. "How big will it get" will be the question of the day as students pour into the library to read/return their books. Students will be challenged to guess how many books have been read while viewing the Lego tower. Students will learn to use their imagination by creating an awesome tower with the entire school. Students will enjoy reading, use math skills, and learn to work with others by building a Lego tower. The Lego Makerspace will be displayed near the library window for all to see.

This makerspace project will get students excited about coming to the library.

Students will increase their communication skills, read more, and use their imagination through creative play. This donation will allow me ,as this school librarian, to create much needed change. This Lego Makerspace will help shape the future of makerspaces in my library. I hope to use this makerspace and many more to encourage students to realize that if they can imagine "it" they can build it.
