My elementary school, Gage Eckington, like many others in Washington D.C., has undergone dramatic changes since being labeled "In Need of Improvement" in 2005. Our renewed focus on academic achievement and standards-based learning unquestionably benefits our students. As a consequence of this shift, however, the children have simultaneously lost their music and art programs, as well as half their physical education time. As a special education teacher, my main goal is to facilitate learning among children with varying capabilities and needs. My students, ages four through six, delight me with their innate curiosity and love for learning. Their academic strengths and interests keep me on my toes in designing meaningful standards-based lessons. Sometimes the students learn best when we paint and draw, while other times they have to sing a song and dance to a beat to grasp the concept. However, because my school's standards-based curriculum largely ignores the arts, I often lack the resources to appeal to my students' musical, kinesthetic, and artistic intelligences. My students currently enjoy singing songs we have available on tapes and compact discs. Given my students' interest in music, I began to seek out music programs that would provide my students opportunities to follow directions in sequence, perform gross motor exercises, and develop language skills. An award-winning educational company called Kimbo designs music programs that enhance children's motor skills while teaching reading readiness, math, science, and social studies. Four of their compact disc packages greatly interest me: Dance for Fitness, Healthy Workouts for Kids, Literacy Skills, and Manipulatives and Action for Learning. When caring adults devote time and attention to meeting my students' special needs, these children flourish. Unfortunately, in the inner-city community where I work, students regularly come to school demonstrating sadness and anger, entirely unprepared to sit still in their desks and perform academic tasks quietly. With these musical programs from Kimbo, my students will thrive. Learning will be fun, and the students will find a positive way to release their emotional and physical energy. My students will be actively engaging in the learning process by using their voices, their bodies, and their enthusiastic spirits.
