My students are eager learners who enjoy hands-on activities. Second graders are just beginning to understand how numbers and math concepts work. I want my students to love math and see it as something fun, but challenging.
I teach a second grade inclusion classroom in a high poverty, rural community.
Over seventy percent of the students in my school receive free or reduced lunch. They are energetic, curious students who are eager to learn and need to stay actively engaged.
My Project
My students need Math Learning Centers that will teach Addition and Subtraction Strategies, Comparing Numbers, Number Sense, and Algebraic Thinking. My students will use these math activities in various ways. They may choose to work on an activity with a friend, or they may want to work independently. They will use these activities during Math Workshop time. During this time I will work with small groups with enrichment and/or remediation activities. Some days they will have free choice of activities and some days they will be given activities that I have chosen for them based on an area of need.
All of these centers are hands on activities that provide manipulatives that will help students understand how Math works.
This is very important for these young learners. With these centers, including Comparing Numbers and Numbers Sense, the students will be actively engaged in Math. I have chosen materials that are a variety of levels so that they will benefit all types of learners.
