Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I school with 80% of our students qualifying for free and reduced-price lunch.
My classroom consists of twenty-two second-graders who are English Language Learners.
The majority of my students do not speak English at home, they speak Cantonese, Spanish, Amharic and Hindi. Our school is the only place where they speak and practice English.
I strive for my students to have the best learning environment that they can have. Most of my students live in a low socioeconomic home. I want them to have the best experience they can so that they can grow up and be whatever they set their minds to. By providing my students with the right support, resources, and opportunities, they can experience success!
My Project
My project will use the Osmo System to allow the students hands-on opportunities during learning center time to reinforce skills and concepts they are learning. The storage containers will assist in keeping all materials together and organized when working with Osmo. The activities bring learning to life.
As English language learners my students learn best when given opportunity to engage all the senses- tactile, audio and visual for more exploration of the language.
They will stretch their vocabulary, and stretch the imagination. The Osmo system allows students to work at their own pace as well as with partners and small groups. There are 7 activities Tangrams for problems solving, Masterpiece for artistic creativity, Numbers for Math, Coding for programming, Coding Jam which uses coding blocks to make patterns and sequences for music, to Words for spelling and Newton another art activity. Osmo allows students opportunities to code, experiment, explore, design, build and explain what they have learned. They will learn how to work in pairs and small groups, design, problem solve and collaborate. This project will allow my students to use their artistic creativity and abilities during our learning centers. It will improve my students' ability to be critical thinkers as well as problem solvers, and especially practice their oral language skills. The strategies my students will use to code, problem solve, design, create, test and explain are crucial for their educational growth in helping them on their own learning journey.
