My Students

Do you remember what it was like to work with a microscope for the first time in a science class? How that made you feel like a real scientist? My students have not had the opportunity to work with any lab equipment even though they have a science lab class!

My students are a group of very sweet, urban minority kids living in a socioeconomically disadvantaged city in Northern California.

They are always willing to work hard and have a drive to learn but have not been given any creative outlets. There are no sports, no fields to run in, no school activities like prom, and very few after school clubs.

My Project

I run a science club after school, and have been trying to open my students' minds to the wonderful world of Biology. So far we've raised butterflies from cocoons and dissected worms and frogs. These activities have come out of my own pocket since my school has no funds. We need basic microscopes in order to visualize bacteria, fingerprints, and anything not seen with the naked eye. If we were to get these microscopes, I would be able to introduce my students to the things they learn in the classroom, the bacteria that they study, the anatomy of a flower up close, an animal cell from the organism they just dissected! We would be able to finally run a unit on forensics in the class!

My students have barely anything in the class.

There is no technology, projectors, TVs. These kids don't have a problem with apathy, every single one of my students have a dream to go to college. At the very least I would like for them to have experienced something that they don't get in their everyday lives before they graduate, an opportunity to be a real scientist.
