Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember gathering around a small table with your classmates, while your art teacher demonstrated the technique that you were responsible for that day? Today, my students are still gathering around that tiny little table. With larger classes, it is difficult making sure that everyone can see.
I teach art in Texas to 800, low socio-economic students from PreKindergarten-5th grade, who attend art class for 45 minutes once every six days; that is never enough time.
They are always asking for more! Due to this, I open my art room for 30 minutes before the school day begins and the students come in masses! They use that time to complete projects, research artists or show me artwork that they have completed at home.
My Project
As an art teacher, I am always demonstrating new projects, showing correct procedures for using materials, having students demonstrate the way they solved a visual problem, etc. This is always done on my little dry erase cart which is set up in front of my whole group area. For the students who are sitting in the front, they have no problem seeing what is being demonstrated on the board. The poor students who are sitting in the back, many times have difficulty seeing what has been written. This is especially true in my larger classes (my classes range in size from 20-30 students), where students are sitting further away.
With a document camera, I would be able to continue doing the same demonstrations for my students, but they would be projected onto the screen, which every student would be able to see.
Another advantage to having a document camera would be that I could record these demonstrations and then post them on-line for later viewing by students who are absent or parents.
With a document camera in the art room, I would be able to ensure that every student was learning.
By projecting my lessons, every student would be able to see the smallest detail without difficulty.
Students who are absent or who need additional help would be able to view recorded demonstrations on our art room blog and parents would be able to see what their child was working on assist them at home with their projects.
