Ladies Only! Morning Science Club

My students need 4 forensic science kits and lab coats for a before school program to encourage at-risk girls to explore careers in science and continue their education.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Men outnumber women by 46% in careers related to science and engineering. Furthermore, white women comprise some 20% of the 4.9 million of those employed in science and engineering careers, Asian-American women 4%, African American 2%, Hispanic 1.2%, and American Indian/Alaskan Native 0.1%.

Half of my day is spent with with students struggling in math and the other half is spent conducting experiments in a lab with 3rd-5th grade students.

This past year I tutored a small group of Hispanic girls in science. I saw them flourish in the small group setting with just girls there was no one the to impress and the thinking and exploration in the science concepts we were covering was deep and meaningful. My campus consists of mostly minorities. They come with limited exposure to science and math outside of the school setting. Science is an easy subject to get kids engaged in because of the excitement and hands on opportunities that it naturally lends itself to. However, in a large class you still have pockets of children that deserve extra exposure to learning. I have a specific group of 15 girls that have tremendous potential. I believe getting them engaged in elementary school in science will provide them with a desire to pursue higher education and careers in science.

My Project

I will be starting a morning club for a group of 15 girls to explore different areas of science through forensics and problem solving. So much of education is shifting towards problem solving, because in the real world no one will approach you create a Venn Diagram comparing water retention of two different kinds of soil. However, if you like to garden it would be helpful to know which soil will keep your plants from drying out. Real world application is what allows students to see the importance of what I am teaching today to apply to their lives now and in the future. My Ladies Only! morning group will consist of 3 teams of 5 girls who will conduct the forensic experiments over the course of a semester. The lab coats greet them at the door and will be a physical reminder that they are scientists and that they are coming to the lab to do important investigations. I want them to feel professional and encouraged in the lab so they are more likely to take risks in their thinking.

My girls mostly come from homes where they their parents work hard to provide for their necessities.

Chances to engage in unique opportunities are limited. These girls have the ability to change the future of science. Please support these ladies to find their inner scientist!
