KNEX Rapid Prototyping: Engineering Design in Physics

My students need reusable building (K-NEX) materials for engineering projects in physics.

My Students

The Engineer, Entrepreneur and founder of Tesla Motors, Elon Musk once said, "I don't spend my time pontificating about high-concept things; I spend my time solving engineering and manufacturing problems". In the end, I want my students to show the same enthusiasm for engineering as Elon Musk.

My school sits on the east hills of San Jose.

From this vantage point they see the innovation heart of Silicon Valley and feel the energy of its start-ups. They have a desire to work as hard and as smart as their parents in the high tech industry. At this point, they are consumers of the technology their parents help make, but are not yet developers of the next big thing. Many of the students excel in academics, but often lack hands on experience. While the few who know how to build with their hands are adrift in academic doldrums.

My Project

With the implementation of Common Core, comes the opportunity to do many short term engineering projects. These group projects last a few days and require a construct-test-reconstruct cycle. These projects are created in terms of solving some problem: make a car go as far as possible on 1-Joule of energy; create a catapult that fits in a shoe box but still can strike different targets behind walls of differing heights; create the lightest bridge possible that can span 1 meter and support 1 kg at its center; creating a landing device that will have the smallest impulse on some cargo when dropped from 6 meters. Ultimately we want to help students build confidence as they as they use the laws of Physics to engineer their way to successful solutions.

Donations to this project using reusable building (K-NEX) materials for engineering projects in physics will improve my classroom by building enthusiasm for engineering and uniting thinkers and the doers.

I would like the typical day in my class to become one where these two groups bring their strengths together and apply physics concepts to create unique solutions to engineering problems. In the end, I would like students to learn by playing with students who have a different perspective.
