At the end of the year, my students want to be reading "way way above" grade level. They ask for free reading time every day and are upset when a special event means we miss reading that day. They ask to borrow class books over the weekend and are proud to tell me about the stories they finished.
At an inner-city school, they lack for a lot of resources.
The most detrimental to their learning, however, is the lack of a library. Many students don't have the ability to access books at home and their exposure to books comes 100% from our classroom library.
My students will use the classroom kindles to have access to thousands of free e-books. Our small classroom library may be their only exposure to literature but it could never replace the plethora of books available in a properly stocked, fully-funded library. Amazon's kindles will give my students access to books like they have never had in their experience as students. They can choose books on their level and according to their interest, they can research authors, look up unfamiliar words, choose genres that interest them, and allow them to have the type of literary exposure that makes kids fall in love with reading and breeds a life-long love of books that will serve them for the rest of their lives.
With a third-grade reading guarantee looming in the shadows of their school year, my students are under a tremendous amount of pressure to excel at reading or else be forced to repeat third grade.
They so desperately want to read and yet have such few resources. Please help them reach their goal of becoming successful readers.
